Sunday Night Folk Programming on WHRV ~ 89.5 FM
Thistle and Shamrock - At 6 pm. Guided by your host Fiona Ritchie, step into the heart of an ancient tradition of reels, jigs, ballads, and laments. Then follow the pulse towards new music: an exuberant blend of irresistible rhythms, emotional voices, and fascinating instruments.
In her 20th year of national distribution, Fiona Ritchie's invitation to The Thistle & Shamrock® is as enticing as ever. Viewing her program as an on-air community, Ritchie has created a gathering place for anyone who enjoys music from Celtic roots, and loves to accompany her across the bridges she builds between the traditional and the contemporary, between Celtic music and the world.
Pickin` on WHRV - 7 pm. Pickin On WHRV explores the resurgent interest in traditional and contemporary Bluegrass Music. The program is geared towards both the seasoned and new bluegrass listener. Produced in conjunction with “ Off The Shelf” the program continues a fine Sunday evening tradition of Americana Music. Host Barry Graham weaves the masters of Bluegrass such as Monroe, Stanley, Reno, Martin, Osborne, with the new generation of performers, including, Krauss, McCoury, and Nickel Creek. Historical references, concert information, and where to pick is always mentioned in the show. Specials are also a staple of the program with Bluegrass authority Harold Smith from the group “ East Virginia” a frequent guest. However, the focus, always, always, is on the music.
Off the Shelf - 9 pm. WHRV-FM's " Off the Shelf" and "Picking on WHRV" both draw deep on the tradition of the singer-songwriter. Emerging after the dramatic success of the grammy winning soundtrack to "O Brother Where Art Thou," the two programs feature a wide array of music, from the emerging solo-acoustic artist such as Slaid Cleaves to classic bluegrass groups such as Bill Monroe and The Bluegrass Boys. Celtic, Cajun, blues, instrumentals, traditional Americana and "new folk" are a part of a Sunday evening that has a legacy of being dedicated to folk music programming.
The two shows are also dedicated as a showcase for local and regional artists. Live in studio guests are a primary feature of the programs .The occasional "singer-songwriter night" concerts from the WHRO Teleconference Center allow listeners to experience talented local musicians that live in the Hampton Roads area. An outlet for independent labels and new artists who have difficulty getting their music played on radio, both "Off The Shelf" and "Pickin on WHRV" are shows which delight in exposing new performers who are helping to carry on the traditions of folk music.
The Folk Sampler - 11 pm. The Folk Sampler is a radio program
of folk, traditional, bluegrass, and blues, coming to you from the foothills
of the Ozark Mountains. It is a radio program of songs that tell honest
stories of the people who write and sing them.
Remember to Support Public Radio!

The moneys raised is use to support the fine programming we have listed
