It has been a long time since I did anything serious with the message base on this site; however, that has been corrected. It has been an extreme challenge keeping ahead of the spammers, but with this new version of the message system hopefully that wont be just a dream

Enjoy!

This was an excellent concert. James is a joy to listen to and a super ambassador for our music. I try to refrain from a lot of foot tapping until I am more familiar with a singers work but for this concert, I was using both feet from the first tune. Before last night I had only heard three pieces by James so now I am kicking myself for not having been quicker to listen to his music. All in all, a wonderful experience. I, for one will now begin spreading the word. What other venue than our music club can bring in this quality of music in a setting that we can all include as part of our weekly doings. So, everyone be sure to come next week and hear "Blues at the Kauffman". I think that it will be a great show. Remember, these players and singers are linked to us. If we do not support them, we will not have new and continued folk music to enjoy.
                                                                                 Jim

The concert was terrific as usual. Folks can say what they like, on Friday we went to the Attucks Theater to hear Mindy Smith sing and although she was very good, that concert and venue fell well short of the great sound and warm environment of that which we are treated to at the library. I believe that the sound mixing we hear is way above that of larger "impersonal concert halls". This is my opinion but I say "WELL DONE" to everyone who sets up and delivers these programs to us. Thank you once again! Jim

It is basically scores of places in China that have people or scripts running by the thousands. They get paid to send out advertisements to the whole world.

If you see in some of the messages that are posted on here ... and before I get a chance to delete them, they are for everything.

They could care less what this site is about, they only care that they can say that they posted the ads somewhere. China is one of the worst nations for this. On another site that I maintain, I had blocked EVERY country except the United States from accessing the site over time. As I would block a few more, they would switch to bouncing messages through someone's virus infected computer in another country that I had not blocked to that site. This went on until I had blocked all countries external and all States except Virginia (mainly local ISP services) and somehow someone's machine that had a re-mailing virus on it still posted something to the guestbook!!

Solution ?? I took the guestbook offline for good and instead of people having to see Viagra ads by the thousands everyday I just delete 10-25 megs of E-Mail a week. No biggy, I don't read them anyways!

Also, the Chinese government has no problem preventing people from sending stuff to China; however, it will do nothing to stop the spammers sending from there.

It seems that our message base has become the target of our friendly Chinese spammers. Please try to ignore the SPAM as they post it.

I have taken the message base offline for a few days to try and get them to go someplace else for a while. The guestbook had to be taken offline for good because of massive amounts of SPAM sent to it daily. Over 300+ post per day of nothing but sex, drug etc.. adds.

The message base may go offline from time to time as I try to combat these annoying items, but I am trying to find a better system that is built to fight the various automated SPAM posting bots.

Thanks for understanding.

I posted a photo from the show here:

Not the best but I was trying to be as low key about it as possible and not interrupt the show. If anyone would like the hi res version please feel free to email and I will send it to you. Be sure to put Dubb photo in the subject line.

Great work getting Doug back; I look forward to seeing everyone again.

He is a gifted guitarist and has that 'perfect blues voice'....He plays all over the country and the world(Europe, Australia etc) and we are lucky to be able to hear him. Do yourself a favor, DON'T MISS THIS ONE!!!

Jim the only place I know that gives lessons is Kelley Music in Virginia Beach on Independence Blvd. It's $80 a month for 4 1/2 hour lessons.

You might want to try and teach yourself. The Homespun company has a great line of teaching video's. There easy to find on line.

John Sebastian, Bryan Bowers and Mike Seeger all have video's listed there.

The John Sebastian video is for beginners and is around $30. and the Mike Seeger is $20. Then you can move on an tackle the Bryan Bowers style. He's around $60 for the lesson if I remember correctly.

Anyway...check it out. We use to sell the @ Ramblin' Conrads and they we really popular.

Hello Everyone. I've recently moved back to East Tennessee (Knoxville), and the Bluegrass scene is alive and well. What I've found is that Bluegrass music is very much alive and well, with plenty of venues for jam sessions, etc. While I miss the Hampton Roads area, I am thoroughly enjoying the fact that there are so many places to play down here, and so many other venues to attend live bluegrass and other "americana" music events. Should anyone wish to head this direction for an extended weekend, I'd be happy to put you up (sleeping bag on the floor, etc.). I'm an hour away from the birthplace of country music (the hiltons, virginia.............home of the Carter family's Carter Family Fold near Bristol VA), 30 minutes away from the Smoky Mountains. Just give me a shout. Mike

Hello,

I know you posted this in January, and I hope you've found a good banjo. If not, I have the following suggestions:

Buy a Deering Goodtime II resonator banjo. That was my first bluegrass banjo, and although it doesn't quite have enough punch for hard core bluegrass, it is a great learner's banjo for a really decent price. Fine tone and super easy to play. You can find dealers by going to their website. I love my Goodtime, and still play it in church once in awhile. I take it camping too.

Otherwise, you can order a good banjo online. When I upgraded from my Goodtime, I bought a Gold Tone OB 250 bluegrass banjo from Janet Davis Music. I ordered it online. The setup wasn't perfect after I got it, but I got a banjo wizard close to Raleigh, NC to set it up properly. By the way, the banjo wizard in question is Donald Zepp of Zepp Country Music in Wendell, NC, just outside of Raleigh. He most certainly could find you a good learner banjo.

Anyway, good luck. If you already have a banjo, happy pickin'.
